Last month we sadly said goodbye to Carl J. Deutsch, one of the founding members of the Crestwood-Sunset Hills Rotary Club. He recently was honored for over 60 years of heart-felt service to our community. He held numerous leadership positions, was a mentor to many, and friend to all.

 

Raised as a first-generation German-American in Webster Groves, Missouri, Carl very early developed a great work ethic, appreciation of achievement, and commitment to family and friendships.  He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Washington University in 1950.  Carl was a very active alumnus, volunteering on committees for the university. He gave time to many local charities, as well.

 

In his professional career, Carl helped form DEMA Engineering and was later named president of that company.  He leaves behind a lasting legacy, with 3rd- and 4th-generation Deutsch family members actively embracing their business heritage and maintaining ownership of DEMA.  Today, DEMA would like to recognize Carl with a $2,500 donation in his name, honoring his commitment to local charities.

 

Carl was a wonderful man who was eager to help and touched the lives of many. Through Feed the Knowledge and many other services and volunteer programs our club has endeavored, Carl’s efforts exemplify Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self.”  His memory serves as an inspiration to us and for the next generation of business leaders and Rotarians.

 

We would like to thank DEMA Engineering for honoring Carl with this generous gift for his life-long commitment to serving our community.  Together with many private donations received since his passing, these funds will go directly toward food to pack in weekend meal bags for children in our area. Carl’s influence will continue to support the Feed the Knowledge program into the 2021-22 school year, and for years to come.
